How to turn a Telegram gift into Stars
Open a gift you received and choose to convert it to Stars. Telegram destroys the gift and adds the Stars to your balance. This works only for regular gifts, within 7 days of receiving them by default.
You see the exact number of Stars before you confirm.
Steps to convert a gift
Use the Telegram account that received the gift.
- Open the gift: tap it in the chat where it arrived, or find it on the Gifts tab of your profile.
- Choose the option to convert it to Stars. It shows how many Stars you will get.
- Confirm. The gift disappears from your profile and the Stars go to your balance.
- Check the new balance in Settings > My Stars.
Which gifts can be converted
Three rules decide whether the convert option appears.
- Regular gifts only. Collectible (upgraded) gifts have no convert option. You can sell or transfer them instead.
- Recent gifts only. Telegram's API documentation sets the default window at 604,800 seconds, which is 7 days from receipt.
- No auction gifts. Gifts won in Telegram's collectible gift auctions can't be converted to Stars.
How many Stars you get
The conversion amount is set for each gift. It equals the gift's price only if the gift was bought with recently purchased Stars. If the sender used Stars bought long ago, you get less.
Telegram's Stars terms put Stars from converted gifts under the creator rewards terms, not the rules for bought Stars.
What you give up by converting
Conversion destroys the gift permanently. It leaves your profile and can't be upgraded later.
Your profile rating drops. Telegram's FAQ says converting gifts to Stars lowers it.
If you only want the gift off your profile, hide it instead. If you like it, upgrading turns it into a collectible you can wear, transfer or sell, but the upgrade costs Stars.

Why did I get fewer Stars than the gift cost?
Telegram pays the full price only when the sender bought the gift with recently purchased Stars. Otherwise the amount is lower.
Can I undo a gift conversion?
No. Telegram permanently destroys a converted gift.
